Korábban Európa és a világ minden tájának legfrissebb és legsikeresebb zenei anyagát mutatta be, külön súlyt helyezve a fiatal hazai, illetve kárpát-medencei tehetségekre, sőt, hallhatóak voltak R'n'B, urban, hip-hop felvételek is, amelyeket a Petőfin kívül Magyarországon más rádiók nem játszottak. A zene mellett életmóddal kapcsolatos, valamint kulturális és közéleti információk is helyet kapnak a rádióadó műsorában. A rádió műsorait és az M2 esti sávjának, az M2 Petőfinek a tartalmait az MTVA az IKO Broadcast Centrum Kft-vel közösen gyártja.
